Description

An annual political dialogue on Counter Terrorism aimed at strengthening cooperation and building a comprehensive approach to terrorism, based on the rule of law and protection of human rights and for enhancing cooperation in dealing with violent extremism in all its aspects, including preventing and countering radicalisation and addressing the root causes of thereof.

Coordination Patterns

Annual Meetings between the EEAS Director for Security Policy and Pakistan's Foreign Minister. The latest meeting in 2018 was the seventh such bilateral meeting on counter terrorism.

Role of the EU

Ongoing EU cooperation with Pakistan in the area of counter-terrorism, exploring further avenues of bilateral collaboration including exchange of best practices and potential co-operation projects in mutually agreed areas.

Relevance for the EU

Strengthening bilateral cooperation on counter terrorism with Pakistan enables the EU to help strengthen regional peace and stability in central Asia, by encouraging inter-faith dialogue and harmony as a key to promote tolerance and social cohesion in society. Discord both within religious blocks in Pakistan and across the border with India has been a driver for violent extremism in the region that has threatened to overflow and impact global security.
